What is rekeying? 

Rekeying is simply changing the inside parts of a lock to operate or match a new key. Most locks are what is called standard “pin and tumbler” locks. Their are little pins inside of the lock that match the cuts of a key. To rekey a lock to a new key, a locksmith will just need to replace the pins in the lock to match a new key that he will use for the lock. According to Wikipedia,  they define rekeying as changing a lock in order to allow a different key to operate it. They also state that rekeying was first invented by a man named Solomon Andrews in 1836, who was a New Jersey locksmith.
